What Is It?
In his 1989 book "The Great Good Place", sociologist Ray Oldenburg spoke of a "third place". Oldenburg posited that we hold three "places" in our lives: A home place, a work place, and a place away from those two to convene with our neighbors, strangers, friends, and family. Throughout our history, these third places have existed in various forms, but the most famous is the public house or bar.
